The Nutcracker is a timeless ballet performance that premiered in 1892. The holiday-themed showcase was originally performed in St. Petersburg, Russia. Since the 1960s, The Nutcracker has been brought to the U.S. and become a holiday tradition for ballet lovers. The Christmas epic was originally choreographed by Marius Petipa. But over the years, dance companies have delivered their own renditions of the ballet classic. The original score also features the music of legendary Russian classical composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.

The Nutcracker tells the story of Clara, who spends her Christmas Eve on a whimsical adventure with a toy that turns into a prince. On Christmas Eve, Clara and her brother Fritz receive presents from the Dorseelmeyer, Clara’s godfather. He’s a talented toymaker who comes bearing gifts for the children. One particular toy, the Nutcracker, caught the attention of Clara. But Fritz accidentally breaks it. However, the Drosselmeyer quickly fixes the toy.

During the night, when everyone has gone to bed, Clara checks on the Nutcracker. When the clock strikes midnight, mice begin to fill the room, and the Nutcracker slowly grows in size. A battle between the toys, gingerbread soldiers, and the mice ensues, and it finally ends with the Nutcracker killing the mice king with Clara’s help. The mice retreat, and the Nutcracker turns into a handsome prince. He invites Clara to join him on a journey to the Land of the Sweets.

Ballet Saen Angelo, led by the artistic director Erin Lane, delivers an exciting rendition of the world’s most beloved Christmas ballet.
