Murphey Performance Hall Information

You can’t talk about the Murphey Performance Hall without talking about the San Angelo PAC campus in San Angelo, Texas. The theatrical campus includes the Stephens Performing Arts Center as well as the Murphey Performance Hall and was opened to the public after renovations in 2016. The complex currently stands in downtown San Angelo and serves the community by performing as a place for local and nationally-recognized talents to bring a variety of performance styles before audiences.

The Stephens Performing Arts Center, the first venue in the San Angelo PAC complex, was dedicated on September 8, 2016. It was located in the renovating Coca-Cola warehouse that was rebuilt to feature a humble 301-seat theater space with a black box performance space, 6 ballet studios, a Pilates studio, and several scene shops. This venue’s small and intimate arrangement made it an ideal space for small shows that benefited from proximity with or participation from their audiences. It is also the home of Be Theatre and Ballet San Angelo.

The Elta Joyce Murphey Performance Hall followed over a year later when it was rededicated on October 3, 2017. The venue offers 1,322 seats and is designed for larger and more intricate productions that wouldn’t do well in the smaller Stephens PAC. It is also part of the city’s heart due to being attached to City Hall and was built from a building first constructed in 1938. The San Angelo Symphony and Ballet San Angelo both regularly use the performance hall when their events expect larger turnouts than could fit within the other facility.

This dedication was preceded four months earlier with an announcement of the first full performance season that used both spaces on June 15, 2017.

Besides its larger size, what makes the Murphey Performance Hall stand out is how it was renovated to accommodate both acoustic and amplified performances while also offering excellent seating in their orchestra and balcony levels.
